Goats, Trolls, and Numbskulls

A Middle School Lecture on Folklore Genres
with Lise Lunge-Larsen

Sample Preparation and Interpretations
by Doug Bowen-Bailey

Original Artwork by Tahira Richardson

This CD captures an actual presentation by Lise Lunge-Larsen in a 7th Grade English class. A gifted author and storyteller, Lise Lunge-Larsen is a native of Norway and has a Master's in applied linguistics. Her lecture gives a framework for understanding genres of folktales, and then excellent examples of each genre. The genres of folklore which she gives examples for are:

  • Cumulative
  • Explanatory
  • Talking Animals
  • Numbskull or Noodlehead stories
  • Fairytales

As Lise Lunge-Larson writes in her book, The Troll without a Heart in his Body and Other Troll Stories,

... love of story is part of what makes us human; it is innate, and it helps us to survive....While ritual and storytelling now may seem unnecessary for the survival of the body, they are necessary for the survival of the soul.

Her storytelling on this CD will indeed revive your soul. Each segment of the lecture is captioned (and there is a printable transcript) to allow for analysis and access for Deaf users of the CD.

The CD itself is designed to simulate working as a substitute teacher. You can meet the Deaf student who is the audience for your interpretation and meet the classroom teacher who introduces the guest speaker. What's more, there are sample interpretations of the lecture by Doug Bowen-Bailey, an interpreter with a range of experience in educational settings. He also provides an interpreter's preparation journal and notes reflecting on his own interpretation. As part of the preparation, there is a research paper on building involvement in ASL texts. Lise's original stories are very involving...your challenge is to create interpretations that are just as engaging. With all of the support on this CD, hopefully, you will be on your way to that goal.
