An Integrated Approach to Teaching ASL in Elementary Settings

by Doug Bowen-Bailey

This CD-ROM is intended to help create more accessible classrooms in situations where Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are mainstreamed. It does this by providing resources for both students and teachers. Included in this are the language talents of Doug Bowen-Bailey, Ketsi Carlson, Daniel Durant, Jennifer Langdon-Larson, and Debbie Peterson.

For Teachers:

Learning is in the Details comes with 7 prepared units which contain individual lessons which are specifically tailored to elementary settings. Each unit has four basic components: introduction of vocabulary; individual dialogues, group activities, and an idea for a story. The dialogues, activities, and stories all have video examples that you can adapt to your own use. In addition, examples of vocabulary are also demonstrated with video examples. It contains over 200 individual movie clips to provide significant examples and exposure to children signers.

Additionally, there is an introduction which explains the larger context for teaching ASL and the importance of teaching more than just signs. It also contains an entire unit on how to create your own units, so that this resource can be a stepping stone to creating lessons that work in your situation and a Annotated Bibliography which contains references to other resources which can support your efforts.

This resource has ready-made activities to carry you through almost an entire year of teaching, and then has the support to send you off on your own for whatever comes ahead.

Units include:

  1. What's Your Name?
  2. Life on the Playground
  3. In the Classroom
  4. Snacktime
  5. Going to the Zoo
  6. All Around the School
  7. Our Daily Schedule

For Students:

Accompanying the teacher resources, there is a glossary for students to individually review vocabulary which is covered in the units and activities. Each item shows a picture and has a video clip showing how to sign that object--both as an isolated sign and in the context of a sentence. Students can then go to a page which contains an English translation of both the sign and the sentence--allowing students to try to guess what was signed, and then check.

The glossary contains over 120 vocabulary items. A great way to support your teaching in the classroom, or a way for interested students to further their own development in ASL.
