Perspectives on Doulas and Nurse

Midwives in ASL and English

Produced by the RSA Region V Interpreter Education Project at the COLLEGE of ST. CATHERINE in partnership with SLICES, this resource is distributed by agreement with them.

This CD is designed as a follow-up to All in Due Time CD set and features a Deaf and hearing Doula talking about working with pregnant mothers and their families who are going through labor and delivery. In in it, the Doulas respond to questions about their work and also show a sample interview with a pregnant mother. Additionally, there is a sample appointment between a pregnant woman and her nurse midwife. All ASL texts include a written summary and spoken English texts are captioned. (December 2005)

An extremely authentic situation which allows a user to both practice interpreting and view the interpretation that was created during filming. This DVD features a visit by three Deaf patients to the pharmacy at the Duluth Clinic - Hermantown. Scenarios focus on asthma, high blood pressure and diabetes, and osteoporosis. Interpreters can both practice interpreting and observe the interpreters who worked during filming. By the Book: Interpreting in a County Jail

Designed to walk interpreters through the intake process at a county jail, this CD features a tour of the St. Louis County Jail, and sample forms and materials, including rules and regulations, provided to the inmate. This is a unique opportunity to practice interpreting a booking consecutively and simultaneously, watch sample interpretations, and gain insight on interpreting in this setting from Jill Hartman and Susan Lorenz.

An Appointment in Cardiology

This CD is designed as a follow-up to To the Heart of the Matter and represents an opportunity to apply understanding of the cardiovascular system’s anatomy to interpreting an interaction in a clinical setting. In it, a Deaf patient and his wife goes for an appointment in cardiology and learns he has angina pectoris. The CD provides a systematic approach to dealing with a medical interaction, providing internet resources for preparation; formats for working both consecutively and simultaneously, as well as the chance to observe the actual interpretation created during filming. All of the video is fully accessible, including captions and transcripts, and is designed for use by both hearing and Deaf interpreters. In addition, a study packet, Steps to the Beat, is available to allow interpreters to work with this CD and To the Heart of the Matter to earn RID CEUs. (January 2004)

Perspectives on Childbirth from Deaf Parents

Produced by the RSA Region V Interpreter Education Project at the COLLEGE of ST. CATHERINE in partnership with SLICES, this resource is distributed by agreement with them.

This 2 CD set features 6 Deaf couples sharing rich stories that include a variety of factors and complications that occurred before, during and after the births of their children. It includes various ideas for using the CD, as well as a listing of internet resources that will help interpreters prepare for work with this material (and with ob/gyn appointments they may be scheduled to interpret.) In addition, the CD provides rich examples of interaction between couples (and summaries of the texts toassist in comprehension.) The couples sharing their perspectives are: Egina and Jimmy Beldon; Heidi and Jeff Branch; Christine and Roger Kraft; Stacie and Scott Miller, Brandi and Tim Rarus, Melody and Russell Stein. Similar to Goats, Trolls, and Numbskulls, this CD captures an actual presentation by Lise Lunge-Larsen in a 7th Grade English class. A gifted author and storyteller, Lise Lunge-Larsen is a native of Norway and has a Master's in applied linguistics. Her lecture gives a framework for understanding genres of folktales, and then excellent examples of each genre. Pam Boswell models SEE transliterations and reflections. Additionally, Debra Jones provides perspectives from a Deaf person who is familiar with SEE. An excellent resource for transliterators to see how features of ASL can be incorporated even into SEE transliterators. (2004)

She Said! He Said!

Monologues and Dialogues in ASL with Ketsi Carlson and Joshua Hottle

This CD has monologues by Ketsi and Joshua, as well as conversations between the two of them in ASL on a variety of topics. In order to support comprehension, the videos are offered both in regular speed and 3/4 time to allow for better analysis. Each text also has a written outline to provide support for understanding. This CD offers a unique opportunity for interpreters to see language styles of college students who are recent graduates of high school. An excellent resource for interpreters in post-secondary settings or who interpret for young adults who are making the transition from high school to college or from school to work.


What’s Going On!

Current and Not-So-Current Events with Mike Cashman

This CD captures Mike Cashman from two nights at the Educational Interpreter Institute at MSAD in the summer of 2002. The first section focuses on an evening of talking about current events. The second part captures his descriptions of the buildings and history of the Minnesota State Academy of the Deaf. Each text is accompanied by a written summary. Mike Cashman has been honored by the Minnesota Commission Serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing People, the Minnesota Association of Deaf Citizens, and MSAD for his work at the Minnesota legislature as an advocate on behalf of people who are Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing. Capturing his use of language and understanding of issues, this CD is an excellent resource for interpreters to prepare working in a governmental or legislative setting.


Goats, Trolls, and Numbskulls

You can meet the Deaf student who is the audience for the interpretation and meet the classroom teacher who introduces the guest speaker. What's more, there are sample interpretations of the lecture by Doug Bowen-Bailey, an interpreter with a range of experience in educational settings. The lectures also have transcripts and captioning to provide access to Deaf users of the CD.

A Grab Bag of Texts in American Sign Language

This CD, produced with funding from the Minnesota Department of Children, Families, and Learning, features the language talents of Nancy Crane and Cheryl Blue, both Consultants with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services ~ Northeast. It contains introductions of the two signers and 19 texts on a variety of topics. It’s a CD designed to meet the needs of Educational Interpreters working in mentorships, but has many other applications as well.

Just Between Us

This CD, produced with funding from the Region III Low-Incidence Project, is a series of four interactive interpreting situations. The situations featured on the disk include: A Visit to the Vet; Travels in Africa; A Parent-Teacher conference; and a meeting with a school guidance counselor. The situations were created by Debbie Peterson, Patty Gordon and Doug Bowen-Bailey.

Here’s Your Cue: Texts in Cued Language for Receptive Practice

Produced with funding from the Minnesota Department of Children, Families, and Learning, this features Tori Erickson, a nationally certified cued speech transliterator. It has a series of introductory, intermediate and advanced texts in Cue, both with and without spoken English. It allows transliterators to practice reading cue, and then be able to check what was actually cued.

Eric Larson gives a series of talks in English and Jenny Stenner in ASL that allow interpreters to explore how the features of language change in different genres of language. The CD also has interpretations of the texts by Anthony Verdeja. A truly unique resource.

Literacy Lessons: Storytelling in ASL and Cued Language

Produced with funding from the Minnesota Department of Children, Families, and Learning, this features the talents of Tracy Bell Koster and Tori Erickson. Using three Beginning Reader stories by P.D. Eastman, Tracy provides ASL translations and Tori provides cued transliteration. A unique resource that shows how American Sign Language and Cued Speech can both be used to promote literacy in Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. An excellent resource for parents, teachers, interpreters and transliterators.


Five Parallel Mathematics Lessons in ASL and English

Produced by the RSA Region V Intepreter Education Project, this resource is distributed by agreement with them.

This CD-ROM includes five advanced Algebra lessons taught in American Sign Language by Steven Fuerst, a high school math teacher at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf and Harv Schuldt, a retired high school math teacher from Faribault, MN. The CD has five lesson plans, with a place on each for the user to access Steve’s and Harv’s respective lessons. It is an excellent tool to use when wanting to develop ASL to English and English to ASL skills in the area of advanced mathematics.


Mentor to Mentor: Tips and Techniques for Deaf Mentors Working with Interpreters

Produced by the RSA Region V Intepreter Education Project, this resource is distributed by agreement with them.

Research has shown that when interpreters identify areas of skill development, most often those skills are related to ASL fluency. Working with Deaf ASL Mentors is a wonderful way to address those needs. Unfortunately, there are not enough resources available to support Deaf people in these efforts. Working with Albert Walla, a local Deaf educator with years of experience working with Deaf audiences on mentoring issues, we have developed a handbook to serve that purpose. This handbook is now on a CD-ROM, with video clips, presented in ASL, highlighting the content of the handbook, showcasing examples of mentoring and supplemental resources.


The Cardiovascular System in ASL and English

This CD, produced by Todd Tourville, represents a coordinated effort to bring technical information from a college level-setting to working interpreters and ITP students. On the CD-ROM, you will see a cardiovascular system lecture presented by Paul Buttenhoff, an Assistant Professor at the College of St. Catherine and Kendall Kail, a Kinesiology student, who is culturally Deaf, from the University of Minnesota. The lectures cover the same material and are excellent tools for interpreters and students to use when working to improve their receptive and expressive skills. In addition, the CD contains model interpretations for both lectures by Patty McCutcheon, a nationally certified interpreter as well as short warmup lectures by both presenters, transcripts of the English lectures, outline notes from the technical ASL lectures, a list of specialized vocabulary and diagrams of the heart.
